Strasbourg’s Fine Foods and Foie Gras

Gourmet

Strasbourg’s Fine Foods and Foie Gras In Strasbourg, you get the best of both worlds when it comes to traditional Alsatian cuisine -- a blending of ingredients and recipes from both sides of the French-German border. Specialties include staples like sauerkraut, spaetzle, baeckeoffe, flambé tart and foie gras. Local wine bars and taverns, known as Winstubs are the place to go to sample them. At the other end of the dining spectrum, Strasbourg is also home to Michelin star-rated gourmet restaurants so it isn’t hard to indulge in a day of fine food and wine.

Morning

Lovers of liver rejoice as Strasbourg is a foie gras mecca, with several foie gras boutique stores located across the city. Edouard Artzner Foie Gras is considered one of the best and has been located in the historic center since 1924. Above the store is a Table to Edouard Artzner -- a gourmet restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Enjoy delicacies like gourmet salad with duck foie gras, smoked duck breast and crawfish; rice salad with conserve of gizzards and raisins; or conserve of duck's legs on a bed of garden vegetables. If you can’t eat in, you can purchase dozens of delicious variations of foie gras to take home -- including versions made with duck, goose, venison and hare.

Lunch

No trip to Strasbourg is complete without a meal in a traditional tavern or Winstub. Munsterstuewel is one of the city’s hot spots, a pub-like establishment with outdoor seating, wooden beams, old paintings and a lively crowd, located near the cathedral. Dine on traditional Alsatian dishes like boned and stuffed pig trotters; shrimp tails in caramelized honey and curry sauerkraut sauce; or boned oxtail in pot-au-feu while enjoying a vast selection of beer and vintage wines.

Dinner

Eric Westermann’s Buerehiesel has three Michelin stars and is set in a beautiful 17th century rustic farmhouse in the middle of Parc de l'Orangerie. It features a variety of dining spaces -- a conservatory, a summer terrace, main dining room and intimate alcoves for romantic meals for two. Enjoy dishes such as Haunch and medallion of venison roasted with autumn fruits, glazed curly kale and strong red wine juice; Black pudding with Espelette pepper, mashed potatoes and pan-sautéed apple; or Roast Alsatian pike, fowl juice with coriander, potato cake and white cabbage.
