Bordeaux and the Culture of Wine
Culture
Bordeaux is a city blessed with dozens of fine arts and cultural institutions, including one of France’s best contemporary art museums, and a day trip to the Aquitaine capital could involve visiting one or more exhibitions of the city’s history or artistic traditions. Bordeaux is also the wine epicenter of France and the history of wine production is an intrinsic part of Bordeaux’s cultural life and identity -- so spend the day immersed in all things Oenology.
Morning
Introduce yourself to the history of Bordeaux’s wine production at Vinorama de Bordeaux, located in the cellar of wine specialist merchants Ryst-Dupeyron. This museum traces the history of Bordeaux and its wines from the Roman period to the 19th century, using costumed wax figures and multilingual audiovisual presentation. The museum also has its own wine school and experts offer one-hour tasting sessions. Visitors can purchase wine at discounted prices and tastings include different types of locally produced wines including Roman honey wines.
Afternoon
Your next stop on the wine culture day in Bordeaux is Musée des Chartrons (also known as Musée des Vin de Bordeaux), located off rue Notre Dame in the Chartrons quarter of the city – once the heart of Bordeaux’s wine trade and the city's port activity. The building is a restored 18th century vintner’s house and the museum tells the story of Bordeaux’s wine trade through a collection of antique wine bottles, labels and barrels. The vaulted cellars and storehouses date back to 1720 and give an insight into how the finest vintages were stored for optimum results.
Round out your day with a hands-on introductory course on Bordeaux wines at Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux. Learn about the different Bordeaux wine regions, vineyards, winemaking and blending methods. Taste four local wines and mingle with the mainly international participants.
