Edinburgh: A Mix of the Old and the New

Culture

Edinburgh: A Mix of the Old and the New Many of the city’s cultural attractions can be found in its two historically preserved districts, Old Town and New Town -- relative terms indeed as the latter dates to the 1700s. You’ll find no shortage of museums or historical attractions.

Read on for suggested activities...

Morning

Start off at Edinburgh Castle, which dates back to at least the 11th century, with displays that tell its role in military history, along with Great Hall, where Scottish Parliament used to gather and the Scottish Crown Jewels. Walk through Old Town to learn the story of Scotland at Museum of Scotland, housed in a new modern building. If the weather is clear, head up to the observation deck.

Afternoon

Walk back up toward the castle and around Princes Street Gardens toward probably The National Galleries of Scotland. You can easily spend the entire day there, or take the free shuttle bus for ancillary destinations such as the Dean Gallery in the West End or the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

Evening

Take in a play at one of Scotland’s most well-known venues, the Royal Lyceum Theatre, known for its classic and contemporary productions.

Overnight

Macdonald Roxburghe Hotel is housed in buildings that were part of the original New Town, designed Robert Adams TK and antique furnishings, intricate ceilings and original woodwork pervade.
